Daily Prayer for September 29th, 2008

God bless America and its citizens suffering the unintended consequences of government intervention in the free enterprise system

The Community Reinvestment Act was passed into law by the 95th United States Congress in 1977 as a result of national grassroots pressure for affordable housing, and despite considerable opposition from the mainstream banking community. The purpose of the CRA is to provide credit, including home ownership opportunities to underserved populations and commercial loans to small businesses.

Company of Prayer says:

While the YouTube PowerPoint presentation referenced has

an obvious political agenda, in its first minutes it
provides a quick chronology of events spanning over
30 years contributing to the financial
crisis today.

Liz Griffin says:

It seems as though Company of Prayer is promoting ( implicitly) a particular perspective on the economic crisis. Further, I don’t think it is the place of Company of prayer to provide a chronology of events about this moment in our history–definitely projects an opinion, implicit or otherwise.

Do not mix politics & faith.

I feel compelled to unsubscribe. As a citizen of Northern Ireland, having spent my childhood in the throws of a political conflict done in the name of religion, my worst nightmares are not in the collapse of capitalism - but in the ascendancy of religious Christian fundamentalism into the politics our planet’s only remaining super-power. It has always been my observation that any power criticizes most in others, what holds true for itself. The message I received today has no place in my spiritual life.

A Christian.

I am really surprised that you cited this blatantly political video. And that you blamed the housing crisis on the CRA (and government intervention). The CRA did not cause this crisis, greed did, from Wall Street to banks to local realtors and to the homeowner and their surrender to the pervasive idea that I should be able to “have it all”.

I know you are a conservative. This does not stop me from benefiting by your meditations, which I do. However, equating God and free enterprise (an imaginary concept I must say) crosses a line for me.
